Made from the stem of the papyrus plant, Papyrus is a material similar to thick paper that was used in ancient times as a writing surface. First known to have been used in Ancient Egypt, papyrus is the etymon of the word 'paper.' The word for the material papyrus is also used to designate documents written on sheets of it, often rolled up into scrolls. The plural for such documents is papyri.
